Örik portrays this turbulent period through the ruthless struggles and shifting alliances of several characters: Mehmet Şahabettin Pasha, a longtime statesman; his daughter Nimet, consumed by political ambition; and Şefik Bey, a Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) major whom Nimet marries for political advantage, along with a wider cast caught up in the era's power games. It is an era in which new centers of power are built through fierce rivalries, populated by politicians who read the political winds and set their course accordingly.
