Set in early 19th-century London, the story follows the Marquis of Alverstoke a wealthy, self-absorbed aristocrat who has spent his entire life prioritizing his own comfort and pleasure above all else. His carefully guarded, self-centered world is upended when a distant relative, Frederica Merriville, arrives in London with her siblings, seeking his help in launching her younger sister into society. Reluctantly drawn into the chaotic, warm-hearted Merriville family's affairs, Alverstoke finds himself changing in ways he never expected a single spark of genuine, spontaneous life beginning to melt a heart long accustomed to living only for itself.
